The following is a list of reading strategies that are used in our reading program. Your child may use some or all of the following techniques while they read. We are trying to increase the number and frequency of the strategies they use to boost whatever level they're reading at. Remember to select books that can be read at a fluent level with a bit of a challenge but not causing frustration.
Tricky Words:
* Sound It Out--Sound out words by using known letter and blending sounds.
* Break Apart--Look at word parts to help minimize the size and to help sound it out.
* Picture Clues--Look at the pictures to help figure out unknown words.
* Guess--Guess the word. See if it makes sense.
* Skip It--Skip the word and go on only if it makes sense. If it doesn't go back and try another strategy.
* Reread--Reread sentences to fix parts that don't make sense.
* Self-Correct--Make corrections so that what you're reading makes sense.

Comprehending What You Read:
* Connect It--What do I know about ...? What does this remind me of ...?
* Understand It--Is what I'm reading making sense? If I don't understand something, what can I do?
* Picture It--What picture do I see in my head? What does this picture remind me of?
* Question It--What is the most important idea? What questions do I have?
* Wrap It Up--What happened in this story? What was this mainly about? What was new or surprising?

My name is Mrs. Theresa Bohnenstiehl. I've been teaching in the district since 1998. I taught third grade for five years while working on my master's degree with an emphasis in reading. After getting this degree, I taught Title 1 reading at Bethalto East for eight years. This year I am working with second and third graders at Parkside Primary School. I am married and have two daughters, Amanda and Marissa. I enjoy reading and exercising. It is my wish to instill a love for reading in my students.
